SEA // MURAL

I intervened some already existing and anonymous banners and graffiti in the public space of La Serena, Chile. I intervened a wall already painted with an autonomous, non-invasive, subtle design. I was interested in the freedom of expression contained in these previous graffitis. Emphasizes the purely pictorial and linear, minimally involving icons that reflect the concepts of crossing, tunnel, landscape, mountain range; rapprochement between the city of San Juan and La Serena.

Both graffiti and mural are pictorial expressions whose legality is what defines and differentiates them. This project, by taking graffiti already made and intervening, transformed them into murals since the permission gives them legal quality; which is a fundamental requirement in mural painting. Graffiti is a street demonstration, expression on public roads and works as a popular newspaper; it is generally anti-establishment and does not respect public or private property. However, it is quite common to see them in all the cities over the world as it is a citizen expression. Its aim can be not only artistic, but of a political nature too; also, of protest or common messages. In many places graffiti is a crime and is considered damage to private property. But in many other places it is being incorporated into the urban design and regarded as a very current alternative form of cultural expression.
